Chapter One Reflection

I thought the chapter was very descriptive and informative. Beginning with the historical overview and proceeding into the change America has witnessed in international migration.  The dramatic increase in Hispanic immigration was what first caught my attention in this chapter. I just found that interesting. Being an engineering major, diversity is a big part of the field. In my military engineering internship at Rock Island, Diversity is a key part of the workplace. Everyone is comes from different back-rounds and has different perspectives on a project or idea. It mentions in the chapter on the main reasons why people immigrate to America. Most of these reasons are because there are problems in the people’s home countries, such as when the governments fail to, “respect the rights of minorities.” I was able to relate to this because in my internship we indirectly deal with international issues such as the aforementioned problem.

  1. I definitely agree that the chapter was very descriptive and informative starting with the historical overview and digging into the legislation then later into international matters. I wasn't as surprised to see that Hispanic immigration dramatically increased, but I was astonished to see how other places such as European countries held much lower amounts of immigration. It is so fortunate that you were able to be part of an internship with diverse work partners and could relate to what the chapter had to offer in regards to information on diversity and immigration. I'm sure it will help you in a later career.
