In Chapter 7 I liked the table 7.1 and how it layed out the variables of culture and the description of each variable. I had never gone in depth and lower than surface level thinking of the term culture. I also had never noticed the similarities between Language and Culture. I really liked how the first part of this chapter compared and contrasted those topics. I’m sure that everyone in this class was able to make a connection to an issue facing many schools. That is, Native American Mascots. We, being the Bradley “Braves”, are obviously connected to this topic. I heard rumors last year that we might have to change our mascot to something like the squirrels? I’m a fan of, “The Braves”, It’s a good mascot name! Switching to something like, “The Squirrels” would be a definite downgrade in mascot titles. But really, I stepped back and looked at the big picture regarding the mascot dillemna, I realized the people who are advocates of change have an argument. Say a school’s mascot was, “The Europeans”, or the “Africans”. It sounds odd, but it is something to think about.
Ellen: I thought this was a wonderful blog post! You brought up some very interesting points. I too remember when Bradley was debating whether or not to change the mascot to the Squirrels. And like you, I thought it was really strange because it is does sound like a downgrade. But after reading this chapter I understand the other side of the argument, which is key in any dilemma or disagreement.
